Task 3 - Be able to apply pre-production planning

Task 3 - Be able to apply pre-production planning for a specific media production

Elements of production

So many things go into producing different types of media and each one is so different from the other, they all require their own specific things when creation a film, game or TV show.
Finance and budget is one of the main priorities when creating a game or film. In the game industry, it is easier to create what you are intending to with a smaller budget it compared to the film industry. You can create very good looking games with money that you have been sponsored with, for example, a company that used kickstarter was Compulsion Games who promoted their game 'We happy Few' who wanted around $250,000 to create their game but because the amount of people that wanted this to happen they ended up earning $334,754 in July 2015. it has since been released and earned itself a 9/10 from steams rating system. Kickstarter is always a worry though as you might not always be able to receive the full funding needed to create your game. If this happens then you may not be able to create what you wish or there may be the problem of cutting employees or not buying the needed amount of equipment in order to get the funds.

During the production of a project, everyone will come into problems either with the crew or budget, its bound to happen. During the pre-production stages of filming so many things are needed that not all are guaranteed to be available.  You must first have to go through the script again and make sure its how it should be, this could take a while especially if you have to change somethings within it. Then the problem with locations crop up. The availability of a certain location that you want may not be achievable. if you cant get a specific location then minor changes to the script may have to be made and again, this can take some time therefore halting the time until production.  Decisions also have to be made for the film for example, choosing the right actors for the role, then you have to finalise a contract with them for the film to begin. This happens with all the actors, therefore takes a long time.

Project management -

There are many things that have to be managed before the production can take place. Most of these are quite simple but are very important in assuring that the project is able to take place. A very important aspect in the management side is keeping track of time. In order to keep in track of what needs doing, some companies or management teams will have a certain amount of tasks in hand and set out to do a specific amount of these each day in order to eliminate the problem of being caught up with a load of missed tasks. If this happens, it can lead to what is known as 'Crunch time'. Crunch time is when the companies team will have to stay behind after work hours so that the tasks that are behind can be finished. This can be straining for the team that has the tasks and can sometimes lead to the tasks not being done to their full potential.
There will usually be set a schedule that will show you what needs doing and how much time it will take for this to take place. In the film industry the plan will span over all the over all areas such as, writing, management, production and there will be a time scale on the chart with how long throughout the entire pre/during/post production it will take to complete. For example, in the management problems the shooting script tab should take almost the entirety of the time where as the scene breakdown should only take about half that time.

Reflection -

While completing my six 3D models i used all of the documents that i created to help me get through the project safely and without much going wrong. The first documents that i produced were the recce report and risk assessment. The recce report helped me see the pros of working in the college environment as well as what the risks were. The risk assessment also helped me see the bigger picture and what the big dangers were such as fires. Having these documents helped me see what the benefits and drawbacks were at certain situations during production. Another document that i produced was the resource list, this was there so i knew what i needed, what i was using throughout the project and what equipment i was in charge of in case of any damage. The SWOT analysis i produced my made so i could see what would go well in the project for me and what i would need to look out for in some cases like the threats.
